Gilbert Gil Rainey

Gilbert "Gil" (Gibby) Rainey passed away on February 4, 2022 at the age of 67, in his hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. His battle with serious medical issues in recent months showed his courage in facing life's challenges with a smile. He remained strong until the very end and was surrounded by his loving family as he passed on.

Gil was born on March 23, 1954 in Lexington, Kentucky at Good Samaritan Hospital, son to General and Opal Rainey. He spent many a year working in the grocery and food industry and retired from Kroger in 2019 after serving for 25 years. Peoplewho came to know him always had peace of mind that they had a friend would go out of his way to help, he was kind, and he was patient. He lived by the motto, "treat others how you want to be treated," and tried to instill that in his family. His neighbors fondly remember him for riding his tractor through the neighborhood for social calls.
In his earlier years, Gil enjoyed woodworking and created many cherished heirlooms for his family and friends. During his life he was an avid collector of many things from bobble heads to bourbon. He enjoyed the thrill of the chase and this applied equally to Krispy Kreme blueberry cake donuts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, General and Opal Rainey, and several dear aunts and uncles. Gil was a loving father to Melissa Soper (Michael Soper) of Lexington, Kentucky, Megan McKenna (Bryan McKenna) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Brent Rainey (Samantha Rainey) of Frankfort, Kentucky. He was blessed with 5 grandchildren: Ava Soper, Deklan McKenna, Adelyn McKenna, Jaide Rainey, and Ian Rainey. He is survived by his sister, Pamela Rainey, who was his care giver and best friend at the end of his life.
