Michael Markman Powers, Sr., age 79, passed away peacefully on August 6th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 28, 1945, in Lexington, Kentucky, the son of Owens Jerry and LaVange Markman Powers.
Mike was a graduate of Lafayette High School, the University of Kentucky, and the Brandeis School of Law. After briefly practicing law in Pikeville, he returned to Louisville where he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Kentucky Housing Corporation, and the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. Prior to practicing law, he taught elementary, middle, and high school. He later returned to the classroom as an adjunct professor.
Mike was an active volunteer and served on a number of boards and committees for the City of Prospect. He was an adult volunteer for 25 years with Boy Scout Troop 30 and served as a Board Member of the Portland Promise Center. He was a former president of the Louisville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, former vice president of the Kentucky Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section, and served two terms as a member of its House of Delegates.
Mike loved God, his family and friends, the University of Kentucky, gardening, animals, helping people, and traveling, having visited all 50 states and all 120 Kentucky counties. He also loved history and sports trivia.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Kyle Charles Powers. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wanda LeMaster Powers, his son, Michael "Mark" Powers, Jr. of Louisville, his daughter, Sarah Crawford (Nigel), and grandsons, Patrick and Jonathan Crawford of Tewksbury, New Jersey.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7th at Christ Church United Methodist, 4614 Brownsboro Road, with visitation at the church from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
A private graveside service was held at Cave Hill Cemetery.
