Lexington, Kentucky - Margaret Nevius Buchanan, passed away in hospice care at Central Baptist Hospital on February 28, 2024. She was born in Lexington, Kentucky on May 6, 1927, to Della Frances Gray and William McKinley Nevius. In addition to her husband, George LaVaughn Buchanan, Margaret was preceded in death by her two sons, Richard LaVaughn Buchanan and Brian Edward Buchanan; and her brother, William H. Nevius.

She grew up in Lexington and was a graduate of Lafayette High School. She attended Linlee School where she was crowned May Queen and was class president for two years, Bryan Station High School and the University of Kentucky where she studied library science. Around age 5, she taught herself to read and loved reading her entire life. In Point Pleasant, Kentucky she attended a one room schoolhouse where her father was a teacher. She was active in school plays, sang and played viola in the school band. She also participated in 4-H. During the war she worked for the Lexington Telephone Company and Walgreens. After the war, she worked in her husband, George's insurance agency and did all his secretarial work.

She was beloved by the residents of The Lafayette, where she lived for the last 8 years. Margaret traveled extensively with her son, Brian, when she was younger, visiting countries on six continents, and continued to enjoy traveling throughout her lifetime. She went on many cruises, belonged to the Lexington Travel Club and was a day tripper in church. She visited all 50 states in her travels.

Margaret was the oldest living charter member of Crestwood Christian Church where she sang in the choir and served as a membership chairperson. She was a Brownie leader and Kentucky Colonel. After the war she served as a "canary" lady in the VA hospital. Margaret liked to do needle work, sew and embroider "but never finished a lot of things". She was a member of the Lexington Woman's Club, the Lansdowne Homemakers and the Republican Women's Club.

Survivors include daughter Eleanora Mauritson (David, deceased), Fairhope, AL; son, Gregory Lynn Buchanan (Jennifer Beth Briggs), Austin, TX; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Buchanan (Richard, deceased), Plymouth, MA; grandchildren, Amy Eleanora Mauritson (John), Eric Buchanan Mauritson (Lydia), Margaret Wilson Buchanan, Patrick Gregory Buchanan, Julian George Briggs Buchanan, Rachael Lynn Buchanan, Sarah Ann Buchanan, and Jessica Rose Buchanan; great grandchildren, Luke Mauritson and Audrey Mauritson. Funeral Services will be 12:00 PM Friday, March 8, 2024, at Crestwood Christian Church, 1882 Bellefonte Drive, Lexington, KY 40503. There will be a gathering and reception honoring Margaret following the funeral at the church from 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM. Burial will be 3:00 PM Friday, March 8, 2024, in the Lexington Cemetery, 833 West Main Street, Lexington, KY 40508. In lieu of flowers contributions are suggested to Crestwood Christian Church or the "Clothe-a-Child" program through the Lexington Woman's Club (GFWC Kentucky).
