Elizabeth Ann (née Newton) Hughes, known to family and friends as Betty or Betty Ann, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2021 in Lexington, Kentucky.

She was the only daughter born on February 18, 1932 in Lexington, Kentucky to the late Cora Katherine (Smith) and William Newton.

Betty was a 1950 graduate of Lafayette High School and attended The University of Kentucky and Fugazzi Business College. She began working for Southeastern Greyhound Lines in 1958, where she met her supportive husband of 58 years, Winfred C. “Wimpy” Hughes, later taking a new position with IBM. With a desire to raise a family, she left IBM and for many years was a homemaker, PTA mother and part-time bookkeeper at Lexington Baptist College, under the leadership of Brother Rosco Brong. She returned to work as a Title 1 Reading Tutor at Julia R. Ewan Elementary for the Fayette County School System, and after 12 years of service, she retired to enjoy farm life at Stonegrove Farm in Nicholas County with her husband. An avid shopper, collector and decorator, she and Wimpy opened and operated CorAlice Antiques in Carlisle for 9 years; a charming storefront on Main Street, named to honor her mother Cora and her mother-in-law, Alice Clavell Hughes.

A member of Ashland Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years, Betty taught Sunday School for primary children and played the piano and organ. She is a present member of Broadway Baptist Church in Lexington.

Betty is survived by son Jeff Hughes (Penny Thomas); daughter Kay Goldey (Evan); two cherished grandsons, Nicholas and Benjamin Goldey, and brother Carl Smith Newton (Janice). She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, her doting parents, elder brother James William “Jimmy” Newton and his wife, Ruby Miller Newton Ward.

Visitation and Funeral Services will be held at Milward - Southland in Lexington, Kentucky located at 391 Southland Drive, beginning at 9:30 AM on Thursday, December 23, 2021 with Brother James Heard of Broadway Baptist Church, Pastor Steve Wainright of New Life Baptist Church and Dr. Hershael York of Buck Run Baptist Church officiating. The family requests, for everyone’s safety, masks are required to be worn throughout the Visitation and Funeral Services.
