Anne Carroll (Reynolds) - Class Of 1946

Anne Ryan Carroll Reynolds passed very peacefully to a better place early on June 24th, 2023. Anne was preceded by her husband of 70 years, Orville T. Reynolds (1926-2017), her parents, Catherine Ryan Trimble Carroll and Rollie B. Carroll, her parents-in-law, Lillian and Coleman Reynolds, three of her brothers, Wayne, Rollie and Gene, and her beloved granddaughter, Maryanne. Anne was a child of the Depression, born February 6th, 1929. She was the oldest child, followed by four brothers. She attended a one room schoolhouse, skipping a grade because there was no other child her age. Anne graduated a year early from Lafayette High School, Lexington, Kentucky in 1946. As a teenager, she met her future husband, Orville Thomas Reynolds, marrying him in November of 1946. She was 17 while Orville was three years old, 20. They were together for 70 years. I believe Anne (my mother) was attracted to Orville, (my father) because of his handsome looks and his adventurous, daredevil, spirit, while Orville was attracted to Anne's good looks and vivacious and sparkling personality. Dad was reserved while Mom was very outgoing. Anne could ride the elevator three floors and quickly learn the life history of a fellow passenger. We were always trying to hurry up Mom's conversations. Orville T. Reynolds took over and expanded a garbage business started by Anne's father, Rollie B. Carroll. Mom was essential to the start of the business, knowing shorthand and typing and able to handle the business accounts. Orville and Anne had five sons: Rick (1949), Greg (1952), Dale (1955), Leslie (1963) and Todd (1961). After having four brothers, Mom was well acquainted with boys. She was never one to let her children take over. We, the brothers, knew from experience, that we could show no disrespect to our parents. For 28 years, Anne and Orville and children, lived on a hill off Richmond Road. The area was still country at that time and the hill offered great snow sledding parties on wintry days. Mom made the house a home. She planted countless trees and flowers. Even in her 60s she was gathering flat stones from the creek to build garden walls and lay out walking paths. Anne showed an inclination toward literature and art at an early age. After being bed ridden for some time with asthma, she developed a love of reading novels and poetry. Once during a visit to New York City, my friends and I heard what we thought to be a homeless man baggling. But Mom recognized that the man was quoting Shakespeare. Not enough can be said of my mother's love of her husband, Orville. They made countless motorcycle trips, travelling from Nova Scotia and west to San Francisco, California. In his later years as Dad began to suffer from Alzheimer's, Mom would sit on Dad's lap and calm his agitation. She wouldn't let him feel sorry for himself. Anne was a good mother. She had a lively spirit and witty/fun sense of humor. She displayed that wit until her passing, joking with the staff at the nursing home. Mom's sons can remember many times at the dinner table that Mom would laugh so hard that she'd be crying. Her laughter was always encouraged by her son, Dale. I told her once in the last years that she was the best mother ever. She replied, How would you know? You only had one mother. Anne leaves behind family and friends: her five sons, Rick, Greg, Dale, Leslie, and Todd; her surviving grandchildren, Brian Reynolds, Chris, Reynolds, Rosanna Reynolds, Leslie Anne Reynolds, Aaron Reynolds, and Adam Reynolds and a great grandson, Alex Drury-Reynolds. And leaves her last brother, David Carroll. Mom had a tight knit group of women friends throughout her life. She is survived by Esther Gilpin and Meacy Simpson.
