Larry Thomas (Tom) Marshall - Class Of 1967

Larry Thomas “Tom” Marshall, of Lexington, son of the late Richard Milton Marshall and Edith Marie Marshall, was born December 23, 1948 in Bell County, Kentucky. He died in the evening of Friday, March 3, 2023, in Lexington due to complications from tonsil cancer. He was 74 years old.
He was of the Baptist faith and was united in marriage to his beloved wife of forty-three years, Karen G. Marshall, November 17, 1979.
Tom proudly served our country through the Army Reserves for 6 years. He retired from his career as a mechanical designer after 26 years with IBM/Lexmark International and 16 years with LBX Co. Tom stayed busy for the next 14 years operating his own business, Marshall’s Lawn Turf Management. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed working part time at Marriott Griffin Gate golf course over the last 10 years of his life. Tom was also an avid fisherman of golf balls and donated over 17K balls to the non-profit organization, the “First Tee of Lexington”, which supports junior golf programs and leadership opportunities for youth. He leaves behind to his family the task of donating approximately 10K additional balls.
He greatly enjoyed his weekly golf games with the Blind Hogs, a group that originated from IBM/Lexmark friendships. Tom was a former member and officer of the Central Kentucky Corvette Club. He enjoyed showing his corvette and earned many awards over the years. Tom was nominated and bestowed the honor of the Kentucky Colonel commission, in recognition of strength of character, leadership and dedication to the welfare of others. Tom and his childhood friends Lanny Akers, John Surgener and Allen Haggard formed the “Mild Hogs” a tame version of a motorcycle gang. The Mild Hogs had many memorable excursions on the back roads of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Karen G. Marshall and one son, Larry Thomas Marshall II (Lindsay), Largo, FL and was the beloved “Grumpa” to three grandchildren, Arion Nasr, Medina, OH, Eamon Nasr, MacDill AFB Tampa, Fl and Lauren Taylor-Marie Marshall. In addition, he is survived by his two loving brothers, Charles Marshall (Anne), Dandridge, TN and Gary Marshall, Lexington, KY; brother-in-law, Lynn Farmer (Nancy), Versailles, KY; five nephews, Richard “Ricky” Marshall (Eva), Hainesport, NJ, Matt Marshall (Lauren), and Wes Marshall, Lexington, KY, Wesley Farmer (Aletia), Versailles, KY, Seth Farmer (Donna), Lexington, KY and one niece, Amy Chandler, Lexington, KY. In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Bradley Marshall, newborn son, Charles Thomas Marshall and sister-in-law, Caroline Marshall.
Visitation and funeral will be held at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 3421 Harrodsburg Road, Lexington, KY 40513, officiated by Rev. Eddie Benton. Visitation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, from 5pm-8pm. Funeral service begins at 10:30am, Thursday, March 9 with a graveside service to immediately follow at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens, 4915 Harrodsburg Road, Nicholasville, KY 40356.
Pall Bearers are Arion Nasr, Eamon Nasr, Jeff Sams, Steve Noel, Matt Marshall, Wes Marshall and Thomas Marshall. Honorary Pall Bearers are Lanny Akers, David Akers, David Adkins, David Stone, Harold Littrell, Allen Haggard and John Surgener.
