Barth Pemberton - Class Of 1962

Barth H. Pemberton, Captain, United States Navy Reserve (Retired), died Monday, Feb. 12, 2007 at sea while on a cruise with his wife of 41 years, Judith Bevins Pemberton, and close friends. He loved his Navy, his country, his community, his family, and the sea. His death there was only fitting. Born and raised in Lexington, he graduated from Lafayette High School in 1962 and received his Bachelor's degree in Horticultural Business from the University of KY in 1964. Later that year, he received his commission as an officer in the US Navy. He served as Chief Engineer on the USS Liddle (APD-60) and USS Beverly W. Reid (APD-119) out of Little Creek, Virginia. He received the Navy Achievement Medal in 1967 and retired from the US Navy Reserve in 1991. He and his wife bought W.P. Pemberton & Sons Greenhouses from his family in 1968 becoming the fifth generation to own the business. His wife and children will continue the family business and his love of horticulture with heavy hearts. He served on the Fayette Co. Board of Education 1979-95, including 14 years as Chairman. He was President of the KY School Boards Assoc. 1991-93 and Chairman of the National School Boards Assoc., Central Region 1992-93. He also served on the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education Board of Examiners. He believed strongly in quality public education and based every decision on what was best for children. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Ashley P. Herndon (Jay), Janna P. Schmidt (Jeff) and Colin F. Pemberton; four grandchildren, Mack and Kendall Herndon, and Kylie and Alex Schmidt; mother-in-law, Glenna C. Bevins; and brother-in-law, Phil Bevins (Lisabeth). Visitation will be Thurs, Feb. 22, and Fri, Feb. 23, 3–8 pm at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Main Street. Funeral services will be Sat, Feb. 24 at 11 am at Central Christian Church. Burial will be in Lexington Cemetery.
