Betty Jean Lawson (Carter) - Class Of 1953

 

 

Carter, Bettie Jean Lawson passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Hugh S and China Lawson. After 36 years she has been reunited with her late husband Joseph Alexander Carter. Bettie was born in Danville KY on December 18, 1934. Her family moved around a lot and settled in Lexington KY. She grew up in the neighborhood of Thompson Edition. Although her family was poor, she had a loving childhood. As she got older, she loved roller skating at Scott’s Roll-Arena (Scotty’s), and watching Sports. Bettie graduated from Lafayette High School in 1953. After graduation she held down several jobs, waitress at a lunch counter and she worked for a bank. During this time, she became a certified volunteer ground observer for the Air Force. Bettie knew Joe from the neighborhood. They began dating and were married in 1956. She continued to work until she became pregnant with her first child. Unfortunately, he only lived 2 days and she lost Joseph Marion Carter in 1959. Bettie went on to have 2 more children and became a housewife. Joe opened their own business, Associated Printing, and she worked part time with him to help grow the business. She became an avid sports fan and a big supporter of UK Athletics. After her husband passed away in 1986, Bettie and her son David continued to run Associated Printing until it closed in 2012. Bettie is survived by one son David Carter and her daughter Robyn Carter. She leaves behind 2 grandsons Elliott (Lindsay) Carter, and Samuel Carter, and 2 great granddaughters Hayzlie and Hallie Carter. Bettie leaves behind 2 sisters Mary Burge and Lenora Whalen and she was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Clark Lawson, Samuel Lawson and Michael Lawson. A Celebration of life for honoring Bettie will take place Friday August the 26th, 2022 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Harrodsburg Road. Visitation will be from 5-7 and a Memorial Service will start at 7:00. Everyone is welcome to wear UK Blue and White for Bettie. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to any of the Hospice organizations operating in the Kentucky area.
