Martha Sue Lowrey (Morgan) - Class Of 1964 VIEW PROFILE

 

MORGAN, Dr. Martha Sue Lowrey 72, of Pike Road, passed away at University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital on January 23, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Irvin and JennieLynn Strickland Lowrey of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and sister-in-law Laura Lowrey of Lakewood, Colorado. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Paul E. Morgan of Pike Road, their son Edward Alan Morgan of Louisville, Kentucky, sisters Janice (Wade) Ferguson of Destin, Florida, Sandra (David) Smith of London, Kentucky, and brother William Stephen Lowrey of Lakewood, Colorado; nieces Felicia Ferguson, Sarah Smith and nephew David S. Smith plus sisters-in-Law Berrylynn (Dwayne) Freeby, Joyce (Ray) Hultquist, Dianne (Russ) Freeman, Marie (Roger) Spealman, brother-in-law Michael (Kay) Morgan and twelve nephews and nieces on the Morgan side of her family. Dr. Morgan was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on March 13, 1947. She graduated from Lafayette High School in Lexington in 1964; Asbury University (B.A), Wilmore, Kentucky, in 1968; and University of Kentucky (M. Science in Library Science) in 1969. After teaching for eight years, she went to medical school and graduated from Des Moines University (Doctor of Osteopathy), Des Moines, Iowa, in 1983. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Tennessee, Baroness Erlanger Hospital, Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1987. She served as an OB-Gyn at the Lister Hill Clinic in Montgomery from1987 to 1991, and in her private practice in Bowling Green, Kentucky, from 1991 until a ruptured cerebral aneurysm forced her retirement in 2012. She married her high school sweetheart, Paul E. Morgan in 1967, and later Rev. Morgan served churches in Alabama and Iowa until her graduation from medical school in 1983. They have one son, Edward Alan, born during the first year of her residency program. Church was a life-long focus for Dr. Morgan, where she was an active participant by singing in the choir for many years and teaching children. She served as a Girl Scout leader for several years. Dr. Morgan enjoyed raising horses, cattle, and Schipperke dogs on their farm outside Bowling Green. Among her many hobbies, she always enjoyed quieter moments reading and making 1:12 scale dolls for her dollhouse and diorama scenes. Memorial contributions may be made to the endowment of a scholarship she and her husband established at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky or to St. James United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be at St. James United Methodist at 1:00 pm Tuesday, January 28, with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 pm. Burial will be at Alabama Heritage Cemetery afterwards.
