Daniel Landon Corman - Class Of 1941

Daniel Landon Corman, 89, husband of Pat Chase Corman, died on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013. Born May 17, 1923 to the late Tom and Cordie Corman in Nonesuch, KY, Dan was a lifetime Lexington resident. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hardman and Shelby (Jytte); two sisters, Vena (Ed) and Margarite; and in-laws, Josephine and Ted Chase, and Tom Burke. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, his children, Dana (Ezra) and Ted (Lorie); grandchildren, Chase and Gates; a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Burke; niece and nephews, Teresa, Allene, Lisa, Todd, Molly Anne, Harold, Judith, David, Phyllis, Harry and Gene; special great nieces and nephews, Tom , Mike, Dan, Ellie, Jared, Jason, Jaci and Taylor; and a host of family members and special friends. Proud to be a member of Lafayette High School’s first graduating class he was honored to be the master of ceremonies at their 50th reunion. Dan was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne serving in the European Theater from 1943-45 where he received two Purple Hearts. He often remarked that the first seven times he went up in a plane he wasn’t in it when he landed! Dan worked before and after the war creating signage and window displays for Wolf Wiles, Hymson’s, and other downtown department stores. After a college professor told him he couldn’t make a living with art, he left school and started his own business. Utilizing a creative and energetic mind and with the help of Stanley Baugh, April Crawford, and Dwight Kelley, along with many other talented colleagues, Corman and Associates grew into a nationwide manufacturer of “castles to cabinetry” for major department stores and malls. He was president of the National Association of Display Industries in 1970-72. In 1981 he was honored by Transylvania University with the Transylvania Medal as the Outstanding Non-Alum. Dan was one of the earliest members of Central Baptist Church. With a lifelong commitment to Jesus Christ he served in many ways including Sunday School teacher, nursery coordinator, Sunday School superintendent, Deacon, decorator for special services, and started Irishtown Mission Food Service. Dan was an avid golfer, fresh and saltwater fisherman, and member of Lexington Country Club where he started the junior golf program. He traveled the highways from Alaska to Maine in his motor home and considered Pompano Beach, FL his second home. He was the greatest guy. Successful in business, a veteran, father of two, humble, always gave a compliment to others, took over the role of his brother in being a “dad” for his niece and nephew, never missed a grandkids game or performance. A foundation of his church, he was married happily for 65 years, and never missed a family birthday party despite lugging around oxygen…what more can you say? A wonderful family man, businessman and American – we will miss him! In Dan’s words “Don’t grieve, be happy. I am glad to be in a better place and look forward to seeing you here.” A memorial service will be held in his honor at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 21st at Central Baptist Church preceded by visitation at 4:30 p.m. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home – Main Street is in charge of arrangements. Contributions are suggested to Central Baptist Church, 110 Wilson Downing Road, Lexington, 40517 or the charity of one’s choice.
